I just upgraded to xmonad-0.9.2-2.1 and I noticed some changes to xmonad.desktop and xmonad.session to add xmonad as a gnome session. I had it working as one before and these new files broke it. Having made a few changes it work again though (giving the error: "failed to load session xmonad" and then logging me out when I hit OK). Also, there is no option in the GDM menu for xmonad without running in a gnome-session.

Please remove the existing xmonad.desktop and xmonad.session and add the attached files in the following locations. Then GDM offers both "xmonad" and "Gnome/xmonad" in it's menu and they both work (for me anyway).

To give credit: These files are from this package (moved), the archlinux wiki and Wey from the archlinux forms.

The files should be installed in the following locations:
xmonad-gnome-session.session -> /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/xmonad.session
xmonad-gnome-session.desktop -> /usr/share/xsessions/xmonad-gnome.desktop
xmonad-session.desktop -> /usr/share/xsessions/xmonad.desktop
xmonad-app.desktop -> /usr/share/applications/xmonad.desktop

I experience this same issue and the same basic fix worked for me. I only needed the app.desktop file, the other two files as proved by the existing package seem to work fine for me. I based my /usr/share/applications/xmonad.desktop on the metacity.desktop file:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=xmonad
Exec=/usr/bin/xmonad
Encoding=UTF-8
Icon=
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=false
Categories=
NoDisplay=true
X-GNOME-WMName=XMonad

Sean: do you get menu items in GDM drop-down for xmonad both with and without a gnome session?
Comment by sean (webframp) - Thursday, 30 June 2011, 05:49 GMT
I do not have a menu item in GDM for an xmonad only session, just the gnome-session.

Sean: The additional files are there to get both to show-up.

Ran into the same problem. Fix works for me, thanks. Also, GDM displays menu-items for both xmonad with and without a gnome session.

Status, still a bug?
Comment by Matthijs (Keats) - Tuesday, 31 January 2012, 21:05 GMT
I'd say yes, because it happened again when xmonad was recently upgraded to 0.10-2.

This happens for KDM as well. The fix works, but the package needs to be changed.

I would rather remove all nonupstream provided stuff. So i will remove the desktop/session files.

Still a problem?

I think it's reasonable to provide an xsession .desktop file for a window manager, so I added it back.

However, GNOME no longer supports changing the window manager, it's supported by GNOME Flashback only. Therefore I don't think that we should provide an unofficial 'Gnome/xmonad' session. If you want to do this on your system, it's well documented in our wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME_Flashback#Alternative_window_manager
