Sounds like an upstream thing, but I'll let Dale or JGC be the judge.

A few days ago, right-clicking a flash movie in firefox with tonnes of tabs open (I start opening them one by one, window by window and in the end of the day I'm busy 5 minutes to close all my firefox windows and gnome terminals :P) resulted in a complete X server hangup where the mouse wouldn't move. When I was about to go into ssh and kill some processes from another machine, it suddenly resumed operation.

The pages that use much CPU, do they use java or flash?

I think that they don't use java or flash. I cannot be totally sure. I have flash click to view so it won't play them. I'm having latest nvidia xorg firefox and using testing repo. I know for sure the problem was introduced lately. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=9554&highlight=firefox+cpu these people mention similar stuff.
firefox goes to 92% and above and you understand it becomes unusable. I hope that I won't have the pb again, but if I do I hope to sumbit more info

I've found that some (or just one) extensions cause weird laggy UI behavior. I've turned off all of my extensions and haven't had it happen again, so I have been turning them back on one at a time until I find the culprit. When I do, I will post it here. We could also compare extension lists if you'd like.

most of high cpu load on many open tabs on my box is related to flash
and java as jo can prolly detect via top/htop. I think this is an upstream
issue.
