This is not the place to find out what's broken in your setup. Find out in IRC or forum if your setup is wrong or _what_ exactly is broken in the kernel.

I don't see how my setup is wrong since it has worked with all previous kernels. I am merely posting all possible details that could relate to the bug to help others.

Kernel command line looks like this:
linux /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/94f722f8-1208-4a33-a108-2286beb2ae34 ro nomodeset add_efi_memmap

It seems that a patch went into stable kernel sources without enough testing.

A workaround the non-boot issue is to use the 'noefi' option on the kernel command line, although this results in the EFI runtime being unavailable.

As it appears to be kernel bug the category should be changed to Upstream bugs. Tobias, can you change it?

Why the kernel is built with an "old" and prerelease version of gcc ?

Linux version 2.6.39-ARCH (thomas@evey) (gcc version 4.6.0 20110603 (prerelease) (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jun 27 21:26:22 CEST 2011

Because it was the latest one at the time?
