Since vlc-1.1.9-2, video capture with v4l is no longer working; only v4l2 works. With vlc-1.1.9-1 both v4l and v4l2 work. Tested only on x86_64, no info about i686. Additional info: * package version(s) v4l-utils 0.8.4-1 kernel26 2.6.38.7-1 * config and/or log files etc. My USB camera ID: $ lsusb Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0c45:613e Microdia PC Camera (SN9C120) Steps to reproduce: 1) Install vlc-1.1.9-2 (I can provide package if needed) 2) Media->Open Capture Device... 3) In "Capture Mode" selection menu, only "Video for Linux 2" is available 4) Install vlc-1.1.9-1 5) Repeat step 2 and notice that now also "Video for Linux" is available |

v4l is deprecated and should no longer be used. The reason why v4l is no longer available is simply because the v4l headers have been removed since 2.6.38.
