If I remember correctly, this problem appeared after the last update, but I'm not sure.

Additional info:

* config and/or log files etc.

you can try to downgrade a bit and see if you got the same problem with 0.48.1-2.

inkscape 0.48.1-3 has this changes:
-  FS#24432
- a patch for compiling with gcc 4.6 which include a bunch of includes

For the record, I do not experience this issue without gnome-*.
Please let me know if any old inkscape package works for you.

Well, I was wrong. It happens to Inkscape 0.48.1-2. What do you mean by "I do not experience this issue without gnome-*"?

I mean that the problem seems to be caused by gnome and/or gnome-shell: I use neither and have no issue with Inkscape.

I think so. The problem is that the logically resource-hungry tools( Pencil, Calligraphy) work just fine.
I recompiled the latest mutter-git from AUR with no luck.
I'll keep downgrading, maybe I'll figure out which version actually started the problem.

Found the culprit! it's every non-default theme(well, a murrine problem). The previous version worked because I was still using 'Adwaita'. Apparently, this is the problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/671536/comments/1

Hiding the status bar in Inkscape also fixes the problem, without the need to change the theme.

Wow. That is a very nasty bug. :)

I will close for now since there is not much we can do from a packaging viewpoint.
When upstream (either Inkscape or Gnome) comes up with a patch, feel free to bug me again and I will happily apply it.
