dmesg
How do you start X? please post your .xinitrc otherwise try nouveau ;)
Moveover, I've not altered /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d or add a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
Switching to nouveau brings no cure - see attachment.
Using nouveau, I can see for a short time (less than half a second) twm displaying xterm and xclock. Then it shuts down.
pacman -S xorg-server
Now both nvidia-173xx and nouveau are working perfectly.
Thus it was either a problem involving pacman or my machine.
I do not know how we can further investigate what happened.
It is unlikely that my harddrive caused the error - it's still shining new.
Nevertheless, I'm running now a long smartctl-based check.
