Looking at http://www.pygtk.org/about.html, PyGTK refers to gtk+ as "The GTK+ toolkit".

Also, a quick Google search ( http://www.google.com/search?q=%22The+GTK%2B+Toolkit%22 ) suggests that 459,000+ pages use the GTK toolkit as an expression.

This is straight from a devel FAQ: http://developer.gnome.org/gtk-faq/stable/x98.html

1) According to www.gtk.org it is called the "GIMP Toolkit"
2) According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PKGBUILD#pkgdesc" :
"The description should be about 80 characters or less and should not include the package name in a self-referencing way."

So this should be rewritten as "A toolkit for X11" or similar.
This exists in gtk2 2.24.5-3.

"GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit "

That's much better than what we have at the moment. Right now, we're saying "The GIMP Tool Kit+ Toolkit, if you expand it out". It's like people who say "NIC card".

are you guys fine with this for:

gtk2: GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit (v2)
gtk3: GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit (v3)

i don't care about gtk (imo we should drop it)

As Fabian pointed out, it is self-referencing, which against the packaging policy. I'm not that fastidious though. I'm fine with what you've proposed :).

I second the dropping of gtk, it's only use is for xmms, and Audacious is a good replacement for that :)
