note that I don't know which one of the files is "more complete" (if this complete-ness applies to .desktop files)

where should i keep this mime info

/opt/kde/share/mimelnk/application/x-mplayer2.desktop

? if i put it to the one pkg, it has trouble with the other

maybe another pkg? kde-mime or kde-common or i-don-t-know-what

suggestions?

Look in the source if this .desktop file is generated by some update-mime-database tool or something like that. If so, delete the file and put that command in postinstall.

I just did a pacman -Qi on both packages to see what they have in common.
kaffeine Depends On : fam kdelibs>=3.4.0 libart-lgpl x-server xine-lib
kmplayer Depends On : arts codecs ffmpeg kdelibs kdemultimedia mplayer xine-lib

Well, at first sight, it seems kdelibs is the place to put it, to make it available in both places. As far as I've seen, many (if not all) the .desktop files in /opt/kde/share/mimelnk/application belong to kdelibs.

On the other hand, it's a multimedia specific mime file, so.. it might as well be in kdemultimedia, but kaffeine doesn't depend on kdemultimedia (that might be ok, but I'm not right).

On top of all, the correct solution might be filing a bug report on kdelibs to request that file to be included. As far as I've noticed, it contains info for the entire system, not only for kmplayer or kaffeine.

"that might be ok, but I'm not right" should be "that might be ok, but I'm not SURE"
