Tom, does this ring a bell to you? I have the feeling this might be related to initscripts (but a quick look at the recent git commit log didn't reveal anything)

Hi Dieter. I don't think we changed anything to do with localtime, the only thing that touches it is 29a29c75, but that looks good to me.
I'm not really familiar with how aif works, though, so maybe I'm missing something obvious. rc.sysinit will create /etc/localtime if TIMEZONE is set (to something valid). Could you explain to me what aif is trying to do when this goes wrong (maybe I'll see the problem then :) )? Maybe best to discuss this on irc (as I'm a bit clueless atm).

turns out this is an aif bug. /etc/localtime was not created in some cases (i.e. in the automatic procedure) even when it should have.
this should fix it: http://projects.archlinux.org/aif.git/commit/?h=develop&id=3c9483c433ec200a8cb35cb978ae4d9e9c994f3c

can somebody confirm it's fixed?

im not sure if i did it right, but i took aif-git from aur, added "git checkout develop" to the pkgbuild, build and installed it on the vbox client running archlinux-2011.04.30-core-dual.iso. then did `aif -p automatic -c /usr/share/aif/examples/generic-install-on-sda -d` and the error doesn't happen.
