Description:

can not set gnome3 sound theme; canberra-gtk-play can not play login sound; empathy still no sound after install sound-theme-freedesktop.

Steps to reproduce:

Empathy can not play events sound, so I try to slove it. After I install sound-theme-freedesktop, nothing happened, no sound as normal.

Search on google, someone said (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=112711) I have to change gnome sound theme. But gnome3 sound theme was unable to change. So, I think maybe I should try canberra-gtk-play first, as you know, still can not play any sound, even login sound.

I tried on a laptop and a desktop (both update from gnome2.32, but I almost change nothing on that desktop), all of them not works.

at last, sorry for my poor English

I can't shut down system sound too. "mute" button doesn't have any effect.

The sound can be muted from dconf-editor (gui) or gsettings (cli). In dconf-editor go to org/gnome/desktop/sound and untick the event-sounds value.
I dont know how to change the theme yet though.
EDIT: i dont have login sound either but i dont know if its gnome to be blame or me, yet.

the alert sound can be muted fine from the gui but i think is a regression somewhere into converting the settings from gconf to gsettings.

it will work fine if you remove all your local configs or add a new user.
