See the chat exerpts from frenode #nm below

Steps to reproduce: set up a mobile broadband connection
- - -<linfan> What info does mobile network need exept the APN? I cannot get it to work
* ikhan has quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
<dcbw> linfan: usually just APN, but your provider might require a username/password for authentication as well, though most do not
<linfan> it keeps telling me org.freedesktop networkmanager was not provided by any service files
<dcbw> what tells you that?
<linfan> networkmanager setup
<dcbw> is NM running?
<linfan> it is a huawei e1750 and country is sweden and isp is Telia and APN is online.telia.se
<dcbw> but is NetworkManager running?
<linfan> yeah, i am wireless now
<dcbw> ok
<dcbw> where do you get that error from?
<linfan> networkmanages after filling in the APN in mobile network
<linfan> when i save
<linfan> the app aka GUI
<linfan> in gnome
<linfan> really, it is even automatically detected i do not have to fill it in
<linfan> wireless works flawlessly both at work and home
<linfan> do i need some permissions in pap and chap and do i maybe need also ppp?
<linfan> core/ppp 2.4.5-2 (base) [installed]
<dcbw> you shoujldn't
<linfan> then i will delete it
<dcbw> can you describe what you're doing in more detail?
<dcbw> so the device gets detected
<dcbw> and you see it in the menu, right?
<linfan> i start the networkmanager app in gnome3 and choose the mobile network folder and choose my country and ISP and name the connection and try to save
<linfan> :: networkmanager: requires ppp
<dcbw> and where does the error happen? does a dialog pop up that contains the error?
* toabctl has quit (Quit: Verlassend)
<linfan> yes an error box
<linfan> with wvdial i had to change the permissions in ppp
<dcbw> can you take a screenshot of the error box when you get it?
<linfan> but i haven't done it on this install
<linfan> guess i could - can i set it up while wireless, do you think?
<linfan> have to figure out how to take a screenshot on gnome3, too - hehe
<dcbw> the print screen button will do it
<dcbw> usually Fn+Print Screen on most laptops at least
<linfan> oki, put the screenshot app in the panel
<linfan> now it did not pop up but i cannot start it in any way - there is no alternative to run a dongle in the menu
<linfan> weird
<linfan> how do you start a dongle with networkmanager? i can either disable wireless or enable but i cannot enable mobile network
<linfan> i will have to disable wireless now and reboot the computer in order to get the error msg
- - -
<linfan> there is no way to start the mobile dongle - there is no option in the network menu for it - is it a second gui you need for a mobile usb dongle or do you have to start it from the command line?
<linfan> i now changed owner and permissions for pap- and chap-secrets in ppp
<linfan> but the stupid dongle does not appear in any network list so I can choose it and start it
* awe_ (~espy@nat/canonical/x-ixwvxakhkbohpjcu) has joined #nm
<linfan> i can only choose wired and wireless
<dcbw> what version of NM do you have?
<linfan> Version : 0.8.998-1
<linfan> extra/network-manager-applet 0.8.2-4 [installed: 0.8.998-1] This one also exists in my distros repo - I run archlinux
<dcbw> yeah, I think you actually want git master if you can get it, I fixed a bug there last week where the wwan could not be enabled from the menu
<dcbw> I'm going to do a 0.8.999 release today hopefully which might cause your distro to pick it up faster
<linfan> maybe if i try the old one?
<dcbw> 0.8.4 doesn't have the issue, but 0.8.2 might
<linfan> ok, so the fault is in the packager, e.g. you - hehe
<dcbw> I'm not the packager for Arch though :)
<dcbw> http://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/?id=9152c304ff0f88308ae6176b8c2dddfb1988c434
<dcbw> is the fix, and it's from April 14th
<linfan> can i wget it and compile it myself?
<dcbw> http://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/
<dcbw> or
<dcbw> git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.git
<dcbw> cd NetworkManager
<dcbw> ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var
<dcbw> make
<Seppoz> dcbw: btw +CMGD=4 is not for listing
<linfan> if i just get the source bz2 or gz url and the md5sum I might edit the packagebuild
<Seppoz> 4. Meaning: Ignore the value of index and delete all SMS messages from the message storage area.
<dcbw> Seppoz: ooops :)
* rtnpro (~rtnpro@117.226.205.167) has joined #nm
<dcbw> Seppoz: I was just reading stuff out of ModemManager and I must have looked at the wrong thing
<Seppoz> lol
<dcbw> Seppoz: for this stuff the best reference is the standards
<Seppoz> qDebug() << "sms text modem" << syncWriteAndReadReply("AT+CMGF=1\r");
<Seppoz> qDebug() << "got set number:" << syncWriteAndReadReply("AT+CMGS=\""+Number_Internationalized+"\",145\r");
<Seppoz> qDebug() << "got send sms:" << syncWriteAndReadReply(Text+QString(QChar(26)));
<Seppoz> basically works for sending sms
<Seppoz> and qDebug() << "sms text modem" << syncWriteAndReadReply("AT+CMGF=1\r");
<Seppoz> qDebug() << "got set number:" << syncWriteAndReadReply("AT+CMGS=\""+Number_Internationalized+"\",145\r");
<Seppoz> qDebug() << "got send sms:" << syncWriteAndReadReply(Text+QString(QChar(26)));
<Seppoz> sorry
<Seppoz> and: qDebug() << "unread sms:" << syncWriteAndReadReply("AT+CMGL=\"REC UNREAD\"\r");
<Seppoz> can be used for reading
<Seppoz> do you think that is generic? should that work for any gms modem?
<Seppoz> or do the commands differ?
<dcbw> Seppoz: not all modems implement the textual version o fthe SMS commands
<dcbw> some require PDU mode to make things actually work
<Seppoz> oh ok
<Seppoz> whats different in pdu mode?
<dcbw> a lot :)
<dcbw> a PDU is a binary structure that you build up and send to the modem as a hex-encoded string
<dcbw> and you get to do charset conversion there too if required, including packing if the charset is 7-bit GSM
<dcbw> it's kinda PITA
<dcbw> many modems support text mode though
<Seppoz> ahh ok
<Seppoz> so i stsick with text mode,
<dcbw> yeah, it's easier
<Seppoz> only thing im not quire sure is how to verify if things worked because.. well sec
<linfan> oh, my, it might too big a mission for me - I think i will inform the maintainer in my distro so he can fix it
