I apologize for not having a better summary but I didn't know how to say it in brief. I also apologize for not tracking down the specific details.

Install the ttf-ms-fonts. Have

*XTerm*faceName: -adobe-courier-bold-r-normal-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

in ~/.Xdefaults. Witness the fonts inexplicably changed to something inferior. Remove the ms fonts. Go to a site such as Slashdot with mozilla and witness the fonts on that page rendered as small un-antialiased fonts. Force a reinstall of xorg. Witness everything restored to normal.

Basically, the ms package seems to screw up the currently installed fonts and then rip some out when it's removed. The first may be a matter of taste - maybe it's supposed to mess up adobe fonts. But uninstalling the package should definitely return things to how they were and not require (or at least be solved by) a reinstall of X.

this really looks like it should be fixed in the 1.3-6 version. can you confirm it's still broken for you?
