There's something I have to add here. I used ff4 from heftig's repo before it was released as stable. Firefox then used to read the .mailcap file and opened files accordingly. For example, I have

application/pdf; mupdf %s; copiousoutput

in my .mailcap file. Starting Firefox with a freshly deleted ~/.mozilla directory, it presents mupdf as the default pdf viewer out of the box. Looks like it reads the .mailcap file. But then it still opens the file with gimp by default. This can of course be solved by e.g. selecting mupdf as the default pdf viewer in a file browser like pcmanfm (that's what I used for this purpose). But when I used the ff4 prereleases from heftig's repos it worked, I didn't have to do anything with pcmanfm, the .mailcap file was enough.

Should I open a new bug report for this or is it ok to put it in here?

i don't consider that being a bug. The version from extra disables gnome-vfs support and uses the application handler found in gio, glib. So basically if you select the pdf viewer from file browser it means that it has better integration
