With Gnome 3 in testing I think it would be a good idea to enable pulse audio in the mythtv package (--enable-audio-pulse) and add pulse as an opt depend.

Users of pulse can't use mythfrontend without pulse support.

I'm using it right now without pulse support - have you installed the pulseaudio alsa package (can't remember exactly what it's called, look on the wiki if needed)? However, I will rebuild if it can atay as an optdepend

Yes and I have alsa support working, however in my case I did not have any option to choose the "default" mixer option for alsa, I was only able to pick items specific to my physical soundcard (which of course did not work).

Ok, I'm just uploading the package now. Let me know if it works

Terribly sorry, but I ditched pulseaudio. I wanted to update this bug report but didn't get a chance. I got horrible static when using mythtv and pulse so I gave up on pulse :(
