hi
the new fontconfig makes trouble with font display, eg. the german รถ (oe), o with two dots above is rendered wrong at 10pt to 13pt.
i played around with the font settings and found an interesting site:

the solution would be:
disable the autohinter by default.

or:
let the autohinter and change the rgb setting from rgb to none.

the authinter doesn't look good on bold fonts and i don't think it should be enabled by default.

what i would suggest is to enable antialiasing by default in combination with hinting and hinting style full as default and rgb setting. throw out the authinter again.
how to achieve this can be found on the link.
i attach a sample local.config which solves that.
just some thoughts from my side :)
