workaround: disable GLX

edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Module"
disable "glx"
EndSection

obs: mplayer uses GLX when use -vo xv , so disabling GLX -vo x11 is needed

Make sure you run KMS mode.

I had same issue. thank you for the quick workaround by disabling glx.

I'll look at KMS mode in the mean time

yeap, is the KMS stuff, thank you for reply.

Adding radeon.modeset=1 kernel parameter on /boot/grub/menu.lst or "Tip: Some users have reported faster udev module loading by adding options radeon modeset=1 to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf." ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI ) solved the problem
