Description:

growisofs is slow in burning a DVD, usually burning at a speed of less than 1x, even though the drive has successfully burned at 8x in the past. Even when I set the -speed flag it does not change. Here is an example:

[rkut@r50 rkut]$ growisofs -dvd-compat -speed=8 -Z /dev/sr1=HOM0NNM2.iso
Executing 'builtin_dd if=HOM0NNM2.iso of=/dev/sr1 obs=32k seek=0'
/dev/sr1: "Current Write Speed" is 8.2x1352KBps.

^C/dev/sr1: flushing cache

I find the second line disturbing:

Executing 'builtin_dd if=HOM0NNM2.iso of=/dev/sr1 obs=32k seek=0'

When I look at the dd man page it has this to say about obs=

obs=BYTES
write BYTES bytes at a time (default: 512)

Please note that this is a Liteon 20x external DVD burner connected via a USB 2.0 port.

Here is what dmesg has to say about it:

USB Mass Storage support registered.
scsi 2:0:0:0: CD-ROM ATAPI DVD A DH20A3H YP5W PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/12x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
sr 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1
sr 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 5
warning: `growisofs' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support in use)

dmesg also shows this line, but I do not know if it is related:

growisofs uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support in use)

Additional info:
* package version(s)
* config and/or log files etc.

Steps to reproduce:

Try to burn a DVD from an ISO file using the growisofs command.

Reason for closing:  Works for me
Additional comments about closing:  wrong usb kernel module loaded
Comment by Richard Kut (rkut) - Thursday, 03 March 2011, 18:20 GMT
I have found what I believe was the root cause of the problem. I had loaded the USB 1.1 kernel module (uhci_hcd) by mistake. When I unloaded uhci_hcd and loaded ehci_hcd (the USB 2.0 kernel module) instead, then I was able to burn a DVD at 8x speed again. Sorry for the false alarm. Please close this bug. Thank you.
