I don't know if this crashes more applications, but doing a backtrace ended in libXft.so.2 doing something wrong. After looking in the gnome bugzilla, I found a reference to the Freedesktop.org bugtracker:

Please apply that patch to Xorg 6.8.2 (we might need some hacking to get things applied)
