OpenOffice.org claims that everything is misspelled, because it evidently cannot open the dictionary files for en_US. Output from the relevant commands is below. As you can see, the en_US dictionary is missing the .dc, .aff, and hyph_ versions.

thanks for the detailed bug report.
it's a duplicate but now i know you have to reinstall your openoffice base not the spellcheck packages.
