Ronald, I am using KDE 4.6RC1 here, can you reproduce this?

I'm on 4.6rc as well, but I can install kdepim 4.4 on it assuming that still works?
Comment by Andrea Scarpino (BaSh) - Thursday, 30 December 2010, 11:58 GMT
Uhm...maybe it will not work because kdepim 4.4 has been built with akonadi 1.5.x

Installed kdepim-kmail and kdepim-libkdepim on 4.6rc and configured my gmail. I was able to successfully send a test e-mail to my own gmail account. So it looks like a config issue to me.

OP: can you test this with a clean user and perform a simple test like I did above?

Can't reproduce this with kdepim-kmail 4.4.9-1. Composing emails works fine.
FWIW akonadi and the whole semantic desktop is operative but not indexing any directories.

OK I've tested with a fresh user account and it works fine. So any idea what kind of configuration problem would cause the program to lock up when composing and e-mail (even before sending, after a few minutes of typing it will do it). It was all working perfectly fine until recently and I don't really want to clear out all my settings and start from scratch. There doesn't seem to be any errors when running kmail in a terminal, except these on start up:

"/usr/bin/kmail(5175)" Soprano: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
"/usr/bin/kmail(5175)" Soprano: "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Connection refused"

Ahh, disabling nepomuk seems to solve the problem.
