I don't know what mirror you're using, but:

[root@server ~]# pacman -S bind
Targets: bind-9.3.0-3

yikes! That seems to be a different bug.

[root@dale ~]# pacman -Q bind
bind 9.3.0-3
[root@dale ~]# grep bind /var/log/pacman.log
[02/19/04 09:23] installed bind (9.2.3-1)
[02/20/04 13:54] removed bind (9.2.3-1)
[08/02/04 16:56] installed bind (9.2.3-2)
[10/01/04 09:58] upgraded bind (9.2.3-2 -> 9.3.0-1)

oops, i know what it is... I also hit  bug 2205  and pacman segfaulted (probably before it could write out the log).

I only have -1 and -3 in my pacman pkg cache, so I'd say I upgraded from 9.3.0-1 to 9.3.0-3.

I saw this issue on one of my boxes too, but I have no idea why it happens. The install scriptlet is syntactically correct, but for some reason the user/group adds just don't "take". And it only happens on some machines.

fun.

Hrm, I know why it doesn't work on my box...

My Local postfix install has UID 40.

Maybe something similar on yours.

This bug can be closed since it's really not an Arch problem, although maybe the install scripts we create should be more verbose with errors.
