I didn't have such issue on my Acer Aspire 4740 laptop with i915 video card. However, the emacs has cursor and font display problem. I believe 2.13.902-1 has serious bug. Revert back to 2.13.0-4 solve my emacs display problem.

Seems that you have the same problem (or related) as reported here:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22148

It's not the same; possibly related, though. In this X fails to load and completely hangs.

Try to update today to version 2.14.0-1. Problem persists. Downgrade to 2.13.0-4 and problem goes away. Mine is not as bad as https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22148 (haven't done thorough checking tough), at least when I try gvim for 2.13.902-1, the cursor refresh properly.

@Liao:
Could you please test the 2.13.901 version? (I think you have to build it youself).
Also if you tried 2.14 version then you use [testing] repo so your system has xorg-server of 1.9.3.901 version.
And I have problems with emacs and vim if I use xf86-video-intel of version > 2.13.901.

@Bob:
Just to ensure that the problem with the driver: did you try versions 2.13.901, 2.14? Kernel 2.6.36? What version of xorg-server do your system have? Also could you tell what your graphics hardware?

@Vladimir:

First, my pacman.conf is set to install updates from testing. Today is 2011.2.1 and
I did pacman -Syu to update the system.

2.14.0-1 failed.

2.13.901 (I compiled using the source from Xorg website), it works for emacs (the refresh, cursor are all proper). But doing `xset dpms 10' the completely blanks the screen and only restart will do.

Not too sure if this is because the UXA doesn't work any more as mentioned in https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22604

Curious: What has the Xorg people do to break all the things? 2.12.0(?) used to work perfectly, even with the `xset dpms 10', it worked like a charm. Now, I can only resolve back to 2.13.0-4 but still the `xset dpms 10' cannot restore the screen problem persist.

@Liao: I didn't try 'xset dpms 10', I'll give it a try. About UXA, I'll see logs tomorrow.
