Changing the gnome's mouse pref panel options (I am trying to make my touchpad faster) does not have an effect on my touchpad at all. Please note that I do use synaptics with the following options:

Section "InputDevice"
Driver "synaptics"
Identifier "Synaptics"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "LeftEdge" "1700"
Option "RightEdge" "5300"
Option "TopEdge" "1700"
Option "BottomEdge" "10000"
Option "FingerLow" "25"
Option "FingerHigh" "30"
# Option "MaxTapTime" "180"
Option "MaxTapTime" "0"
Option "MaxTapMove" "220"
Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
Option "MinSpeed" "0.06"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.12"
Option "AccelFactor" "0.0010"
Option "SHMConfig" "on"
# Option "Repeater" "/dev/ps2mouse"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
EndSection

Gnome's settings should overwrite synaptics' for acceleration because then
1. laptop users end up with a pref panel that doesn't work for them
2. users who might not be able to have priviliges to edit xorg.conf

Seems someone else wants it too, and it hasn't been added to the new gnome stuff.
Since we're maintainers and not gnome programmers and a bug exists upstream, I'm closing this one.
