Description:
The most recent mplayer upate pulls in libpulse.
I was under the impression that PA would remain optional and applications could output to PA using alsa.

pulseaudio was split into libpulse and pulseaudio, making pulseaudio server optionally.

libpulse is like any other lib in your system.
