The prefered way of reloading bind is by using "rndc reload". Looking at Fedora/Redhat's init script, I see they try to do rndc reload first, and if that fails they're doing a kill -HUP on the pid of /usr/sbin/named.

I have implemented this in bind-9.7.2.P3-2 which is currently in [testing].
