I was using ATI mobility radeon 7000 on a thinkpad X32 when getting into this problem. I used default settings for xorg and there was nothing in xorg.conf . Now that thinkpad is replaced by a ASUS UL30A with an inbuilt Intel display (i915) and the problem is gone. Thus I suspect the problem is in default "ati" driver settings.
