Description:
I am unable to resume from gnome-screensaver or xscreensaver, since updates on Monday, Oct. 18th, 2010. This is without suspend or hibernation turned on - it is solely with screensavers.

When I attempt to resume from xscreensaver by either moving the mouse or a key on the keyboard, there is a PAM authentication error, however, I can not see the error in its entirety; the screen goes almost straight away to blank. The only way at this time to resume from xscreensaver is to go to tty and kill it there, using Ctrl+Alt+F2 (which I am able to do).

When I attempt to resume from gnome-screensaver, it takes it at least some 30 seconds to do so, and when it does, my hard drive runs for some 3 minutes (literally!!), trying to catch up from it (so to speak), so there may as well be a memory issue.

This currently is the only single issue I have in Arch - it is 100% rock stable with everything else that I use.

$ uname -a
Linux dedanna.rocks.net 2.6.35-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Sep 29 07:17:20 UTC 2010 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

This is on an Nvidia 7300 GT card btw.

Any help with this is much appreciated. This also happened with the previous nvidia256 driver.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
* config and/or log files etc.

$ pacman -Q nvidia
nvidia 260.19.12-1

Versions of Xorg, etc. can be found in the attached logs.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Update Arch, with xscreensaver and gnome updates this week
2) Turn on gnome-screensaver, OR
3) Alternatively, turn on xscreensaver with Xscreensaver-demo
4) Leave the computer for a while, let screensavers run (I typically do overnight)
5) Attempt to resume from screensavers using either the mouse or keyboard - note that with xscreensaver, you can not resume, and with gnome-screensaver, it takes time, and leaves the hard drive running for several minutes.

If any other information is needed, please let me know.

Thank you!

I have run since I filed this bug with no screensavers turned on; they are all turned off. Also, even though I've set my screen to blank as off, it still blanks when I leave it for the night, and in the morning I have a heck of a time resuming from the blanking. I've tried turning the monitor on and off to get it to resume, and it doesn't work, so I hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 and Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to the desktop - only then will it resume, and even then sometimes I have to do it a second time.

This is not good...

I'm attaching my .xsession-errors file in the hopes there may be something there that will help.

Thanks.

I'm really wishing this would go somewhere. I'm still having a heckuva time with it in Arch. It's next to impossible to resume from blanking in the mornings when I get up; it takes me a good half hour to get it to, and I really can't shut down overnight.

I have done everything that I possibly can using xset, among other things, and still have this going on with my monitor, the blanking, even with dpms completely turned off, along with both gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver. Please see this thread: http://bjoernvold.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=838

I need help with this, on a Samsung Syncmaster 731B monitor, an Nvidia 7300 GT card, and nowhere to go at this time but down! Thanks!

I am fully updated, by the way, with the latest Nvidia driver and latest Xorg to date in the Arch repos.

And if you think the bug is upstream, please let me know, so I can file it there.

Thanks.

I need to close this bug - have found since that it's either a kernel, monitor, or hard drive resuming bug - not sure which. I'll be testing to see.
