Archlinux creates /tmp as tmpfs, which I think is a good idea. However, some packages (including KDE) use /var/tmp for their temporary files, so I think it would be good to make /var/tmp a symlink to /tmp by default. I run this setup since ~2 weeks and didn't experience any problems.

I hate the use of tmpfs for /tmp, so I wreck the /tmp mountpoint from my /etc/fstab.
Using tmpfs to store useless files is, as the files are: useless. It costs you RAM and whenever you install something large that extracts to /tmp, you're fucked.

I think I'll leave /var/tmp alone, so we have a non-tmpfs alternative for larger temp files.
