DetailsShould I need to compile my own kernel each time a new comes out just because I want to use framebuffer mode? That is silly, the vesa fb driver is incomplete, until then I think you should consider adding i810 fb support. Even slackware supports framebuffer on this card right from first boot using stock kernels. If arch linux have less hardware support the slackware, then I think I will want to switch back to a more hardware friendly distro :(
From the Intel's i810 support page Common Questions and Issues with Linux Does the vesafb frame-buffer module work on the IntelĀ® 810 Chipset? No. The vesafb module can only make use of linear VESA modes. The IntelĀ® 810 chipset uses banked modes and therefore, cannot boot into a frame-buffer. It would be possible to add banked mode support to the vesafb driver, but as of yet there are no plans to do so. |
