I cannot use framebuffer with stock arch kernel because the kernel fails to detect any fb modes, it probably needs the i810/815 (CONFIG_FB_I810). Built in intel 82815 gfx on a intel i815 PIII mobo. I have no explanation why vesa fb does not work but cat /proc/fb shows nothing and no fb modes when trying "scan" at boot display resolution prompt.

Try using a custom kernel. The stock Arch kernel does not include any framebuffer support except for good ol' plain VESA support.
