After adding xorg with wget command: loaded kde with pacman -Sy kde.

Received error kdebase corrupted...performed ..rm kdebase from cache...
Entered dependencies separately with ..pacman -S then ;
pacman -A kdebase-3.3.2-4.pkg.tar.gz

After completion, attempted to perform;
# xorgconfig..... no such file or directory

enter cd /etc/X11
X11# ls -l |less

Found not one reference to xorg.conf

Unable to edit xorg nor proceed to kde.

What is the md5sum of the xorg package? It sounds like your version may be corrupt.

[jvinet@mars ~]$ md5sum /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-11R6.8.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
ca4bcdfb6f99e41be508ea8b42815e55 /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-11R6.8.1-1.pkg.tar.gz

The correct sum is ca4bcdfb6f99e41be508ea8b42815e55.

Pleased to receive the prompt response.

The download was identified as corrupted after the download and the md5 check confirmed the fact.

I assumed that the failures to download were peculiar to the xorg program /or were due to poor internet performance. I had evidenced two losses of data sync during two of the download attempts. I made dozens of tries for several days and changed mirrors as well.

The problem has been solved......I have a 3GB Ram component which causes the downloads to fail...not all downloads fail..only those of 50MB. When I reduce the ram to 512MB, I am able to download xorg with no problem. I also can download XFree86, each having over 50MB of data.

Neither program performs the function they are supposed to perform in my computer. After struggling with the download problem feverishly for at least a week, I now find that the program(s) are useless and I have lost my display capability that I have had for two years.

This reminds me of windows "upgrades" which took away what you wanted and gave you a trouble in return.

I have an ATI display card which performed very nicely before arch 0.7 "upgrade".

I am in KnoppixLiveCD until ??? It recognizes my ATI pci without xorg.

Okay, so you've got the Xorg package installed fine. I assume you got through the configuration (xorgcfg or xorgconfig) fine.

What happens when you try to startx? Anything interesting in /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

As I said before, the display is not available...module not available for ATI display card...working throughout the many upgrades until arch 0.7 CD install.

I am able to run Knoppix LiveCD with no need for any patches or xorg's or xfree86's and their configs. Neither config permits ATI driver, but it was there before the arch 0.7 wombat CD install. (do wombats bite?)

I think that a motto is in need....archocratic oath...do no damage.

I have lost use of my display in arch and googling reveals it is a general problem in the upgrade. Fourteen pages of mistrakes and counting in ATI tutorial. Denigrating ATI seems to be popular in many users minds. I do not expect that my system will run correctly if I try to patch and repatch as is evidenced by the repeated failures reported after patching.

I await a better way to set up arch hdwe detect before running arch again.
I lost a HDD trying to get things going, bucks lost. I wanted to get an LCD display but now need a HDD. No need for a display in arch, won't run!

What can we do from here to help? Has ATI support improved at all? What's your system currently doing?

I have resolved my difficulties and only have KDE related glitsch which prevents opening a directory in the file manager.

I thank all for the replies and have a good Linux day!!!

I would close this item...thanks.
