Summary and Info:
Electric was fine before. After recent updates, now it takes moving the mouse around for 5+ seconds to return to the desktop. However, electric sheep hasn't been updated in a long while as I've installed it only once and it's been at the same version ever since.
Some other package, i believe, has changed on the system (I think it has to do with video codecs) that is making electric sheep lag when exiting.

It's possible this could be affecting other apps that use the same video codecs as electric sheep, but I haven't experimented or noticed anything yet.

Steps to Reproduce:
Install Electric Sheep screensaver and it will take too long to return to the desktop. Other screensavers are unaffected (as far as i've noticed).

This has nothing to do with the Pacman project...

Oops, i didn't realize i was posting under pacman. Did you move it?

Also to note, this started happening either on 7/20/2010 or 8/24/2010 (one of the last times i did system updates). I noticed that there were updates to gstreamer, if that's the case.

electricsheep use mplayer, not gstreamer.

Are you using xscreensaver? It works fine here:
$ xscreensaver-command -activate

When I press a key or mouse the mouse, it stops automatically. Try updating your system.

Wow, coincidentally there's actually an electricsheep update now... let's see what happens...

Nope, it's not fixed... It seems like the mouse movement has to be more vigorous to exit. If i move the mouse like normal, it doesn't exit like any other screen saver.

No update in several months. What is the status of this bug?

I'm not sure, I've uninstalled electricsheep and opted for a default screensaver that exits immediately like intended. Probably not fixed, but no one else cares, so possibly just close it and re-open in the future if needed.
