Description: miro 3.0.3 fails to start, with gstreamer0.10-{base,good}-plugins already installed (ie, not the same things as the other bugreport).

Everything has been updated to the latest versions:

[rene@e600 ~]$ pacman -Q | grep -i gstreamer
gstreamer0.10 0.10.30-1
gstreamer0.10-bad 0.10.19-1
gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins 0.10.19-1
gstreamer0.10-base 0.10.30-1
gstreamer0.10-base-plugins 0.10.30-1
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.10-1
gstreamer0.10-good 0.10.24-1
gstreamer0.10-good-plugins 0.10.24-1
gstreamer0.10-python 0.10.18-1
gstreamer0.10-ugly 0.10.15-4
gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins 0.10.15-4

another report (for a different distribution) mentioned something about xulrunner:

[rene@e600 ~]$ pacman -Q | grep -i xulrunner
xulrunner 1.9.2.10-1

When started from console miro starts and displays the following, then just sits there without any further results indefinitely. Removing $HOME/.miro does not help either.

[rene@e600 ~]$ miro

I assume the other bug report is https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20454
Comment by René Herman (rene) - Saturday, 18 September 2010, 22:43 GMT
Yes, sorry for not mentioning that (but to be extra clear -- this problem here is unsolved by the 20454 remedy, even though the "fails to start" might suggest a similarity. I suppose the "First Time -- Calling Handler" spot is just a spot where lots can be wrong...)

Due to the assignment of this bug, I rechecked. I have no idea what has changed in the meantime (at least not the gstreamer or xulrunner packages mentioned in the report) but miro is all of a sudden starting up correctly now. Am requesting closure of this bug therefore.

Okay, saves me a bit of time, I was just looking how we can produce useful output with miro. Probably we need to run miro with the --unittest flag, though I'm not sure if it will find all errors.

Well, thanks for letting me know it works again as I couldn't reproduce it on my python 2.7 staging machine.

I'm having the very same issue on a fresh arch install!

@ Cyrill:

A rather lame suggestion but could you try rebooting? My version of the problem went away seemingly without me doing anything about it (ie, comment #3) and I wondered at the time if this was some one-time issue with python specific environment variables not yet having been sourced from a boot-time profile script... or something.

Couldn't in fact remember if all the miro failures were within one bootup and I shrugged it off since it was working -- and if I actually check now there do not seem to BE any such variables defined now that miro's working fine but I really haven't a clue what the magic fix was here if it wasn't something exceedingly lame like that. I can't test anything anymore since it's working but a reboot should although likely useless at least be a QUICK test for you... :-/

(no further suggestions from me).

One of these packages fixed it:

'pacman -S vlc xine-ui gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg'

I might try to remove them as well and see if it still works. Atm I don't have access to the machine..

miro only uses gstreamer, so it can only be due to gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg in that case. Can someone confirm that it is needed, I'm away from my computer now.

[edit] I assume you're using the miro 3.5 release?
Comment by Ronald van Haren (pressh) - Thursday, 28 October 2010, 20:38 GMT
still works for me when I remove all those packages Cyrill mentioned. If no new information comes up I'll close this (again) in a few days.

maybe now is related to  FS#21426  ?
Comment by Ronald van Haren (pressh) - Tuesday, 02 November 2010, 21:06 GMT
@Ionut: I doubt it, as it works without the package here.

I'm closing this, feel free to re-open if there is more information on what the actual problem is.
