I'd just add that this patch
ftp://ftp.cwru.edu/pub/bash/bash-3.0-patches/bash30-002
is indeed working for me (or at least all 16 of them are) and I'd widen the bug report to saying applying all official patches unless there's a particular reason not to would be a good principle.
