Since upgrading from kernel26-2.6.10-2 to kernel26-2.6.10-3, the 3c59x eth0 driver stopped working. Reverting to release 2 cured the problem.

What is the error reported when you try to modprobe the 3c59x module?
Comment by Bob (Cotton) - Wednesday, 26 January 2005, 23:54 GMT
No error reported on modprobe 3c59x

but ifconfig eth0 then gives:

eth0: error fetching information. Device not found.

Hmm... So the module does show up in the lsmod output after you modprobe it?

Does 'dmesg' report anything interesting?

Nothing obvious in dmesg.

A difference in the /var/log/kernel file between release 2 & 3 was that the following lines:

Linux Kernel Card Services
options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]

were present booting with kernel26-2.6.10-2 but not with kernel26-2.6.10-3

Comparing the differences in the dmesg files for releases 2 and 3 shows that release 2 contains a raft of interrupt related lines that are missing from the release 3 dmesg file.

These lines are shown in the first screenshot at:

http://www.bobbybase.ndo.co.uk/

Also the lines:

Linux Kernel Card Services
options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]

occur near the start of release 2 dmesg, but towards the end of release 3 dmesg (see screenshot 2on the page above).

This was in fact a pcmcia problem and was solved using advice given in task 2015:

Solved by editing /etc/conf.d/pcmcia and changing the "PCIC=i82365" line to be "PCIC=yenta_socket"

(This is also needed when using the 2.6.11-1 kernel)
