Description:
When I use "ifconfig wlan0 up" to bring up my wireless card the whole system freezes. itsbrad212 (on the forums[1]) helped me determine that the specific kernel version I was using is causing the problem. He also found a thread[2] from the linux-wireless mailing list which shows that I'm not the only person affected.

The solution was to simply use a more recent version of the ath9k driver. I used the one from compat-wireless-2010-08-21 and so far it's been running smoothly.

Additional info:
* kernel26 version 2.6.35.1 and 2.6.35.4 (both of those exhibit the bug, I can only assume the ones in between are also problematic)
* The affected card (from lspci): 04:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

Steps to reproduce:
- ifconfig wlan0 up
- *crash*

is this issue still around?
Comment by Pablo (belerofonte) - Friday, 22 April 2011, 13:28 GMT
Yes the issue is still present here with the latest packages form stable repositorie.

Should I report the bug upstream?

Hi. I have had similar problem with my AR9285 since 2.6.35, I have occasionaly tried newer kernels up to current 2.6.39, all of them having the problem, so until now I have been using 2.6.34.3. But now I have switched from using wicd to networkmanager (for another unrelated reason), and the problem suddenly disappeared. I'm willing to provide more detailed information if requested.

Hi Ronald,
I have same card and same problem ... from kernel 2.6.34 maybe older. When I have connected LAN cable I haven't "freezing" effect.
