I installed python-sphinx but could not use it to generate a PDF, so I had to use pkgfile to find out which packages I needed.

python-sphinx uses pdflatex for PDF generation.

without texlive-latexextra this error is given:
! LaTeX Error: File `titlesec.sty' not found.

So texlive-latex3 and texlive-latexextra should be listed as an optional dependency for python-sphinx.
