yes chown -R kdm:kdm /var/lib/kdm fixes this issue.

On my PC it worked fine, until the 4.5.0 update, on my laptop it never worked (both had the permissions set to root:root after the update). There's also a new report in this bugtracker here: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20729

The directory stayed root:root here as well, so it was not fixed properly.

No news? When will be fixed this issue?
Comment by Ronald van Haren (pressh) - Friday, 24 September 2010, 08:53 GMT
seems that there was a typo in the .install file, fixed it in trunk so it will be there for next release.
Comment by Andrea Scarpino (BaSh) - Friday, 24 September 2010, 12:36 GMT
the fix is included in kdebase-workspace 4.5.1-3 that will be in [staging] soon

Manually set /var/lib/kdm to root:root, installed the package (64 bit), and now the permissions are back to kdm:kdm, so seems to work fine (didn't restart so can't say anything about possible other breakages, but I don't expect one).
