If I'm not mistaken this adds the ability to show your current location? Anything else it adds?

According to the marble developers, displaying the location will also show a track

I do not see any option about GPS in kdeedu cmakelist. Maybe this should be enabled in kdebase-workspace.

I think you should just install gpsd, judging from the CMakeLists.txt in the plugins/positionprovider directory, support is automatically built if it is present.
