Description:

Arch host is using the pulseaudio sound system. Run qemu-kvm with guest sound hardware support. Qemu-kvm will use the pulseaudio alsa-plugin. This causes high cpu load on the Arch host and sluggish sound application response on the guest.

Compiling qemu-kvm with pulseaudio support fixes the above problems as the pulseaudio-plugin is no longer used.

See my forum post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=102928

Additional info:

qemu-kvm: 0.12.5-1

Steps to reproduce:

Run a guest with sound support, e.g.: qemu guest.img -soundhw ac97

Not related to pulseaudio. Using directly alsa, qemu-kvm proccess is at 100% with ac97. Running with QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=oss qemu-system-x86_64 -soundhw ac97 ... workaround the issue. Same on i686.

Please report to upstream.

is this still an issue?

Not for me (x86_64 and qemu-kvm 0.15 with alsa); both ac97 and intel-hda (full duplex) work fine.
