Description:

NILFS2 is in the arch kernel since 2.6.24 and it would be great to have its utilities added to the base group and have it included in the installer ISO.

Reason for closing:  Implemented
Additional comments about closing:  nilfs-utils is in core, which is all we need

I definitely want to support nilfs in aif and include it on our images.
Not sure what our policy is for adding things to the base group, i leave that to someone else.

I agree with moving nilfs-utils to [core] but not to the base group, because packages in the base group are assumed to be installed on every system, but not everyone needs nilfs and it's not one of the default filesystems. But it should indeed be in [core], so that it can be installed on the first installation.

I agree. I just checked and it looks like xfsprogs is in core as well, so that would be consistent. When I opened the bug I assumed all filesystem related utilities resided in base.

Can someone edit the bug description and change base to core? I can't edit it.

Because this bug report is about nilfs-utils, I didn't want to mention the other filesystem utils here, but I've written something about them on the mailing list.

But on the other hand I don't know the policy about the filesystem utils. If they need to be in base to be installed on (not by) the LiveCD, then they should stay in base and nilfs-utils should be moved to base, too. Otherwise filesystem utils should be removed from base, but stay in [core]. Exceptions are probably e2fsprogs and reiserfsprogs, but not everyone needs them, too. So I'm not quite sure about that.

If AIF could handle this, means install the necessary filesystem utils or select them for installation automagically if a partition is formatted with the according filesystem by AIF, then e2fsprogs and reiserfsprogs should probably be removed from base, too.

Bump.
the only thing that needs to happen is nilfs-utils should go in core.
Heiko, that's exactly what i'm working on right now :)

Nilfs2 is now available in aif. http://projects.archlinux.org/aif.git/commit/?id=6860a04023cb2e3b60d31f792e35e59fc7ca7344
if nilfs-utils is in core, I can start building iso's that support nilfs2.

What about the other filesystems like btrfs?
Comment by Dieter Plaetinck (Dieter_be) - Sunday, 05 December 2010, 18:48 GMT
btrfs is more complicated to implement in aif. and not in the scope of this ticket.

Without  FS#20260  going into initscripts, you can't use nilfs on / without some extra legwork, so it would be good to get that incorporated as well.

~ pacman -Si nilfs-utils | grep core
Repository : core
