Steps to reproduce:
With jmicron card reader mounting properly on x86_64 architecture with hal, install fspot. Hal does not automount the drive, and fdisk does not see it either. After manually starting the pciehp module and adding it to the daemons array in /etc/rc.conf everything works fine.

F-spot doesn't change anything to automatic loaded modules. Udev has the task to autoload pciehp on your laptop, and only udev rules or blacklists can disable that. I don't see how f-spot can be related to your problems. Besides that, hal is not used on GNOME anymore.
