Upgrading from Gnome 2.2 to 2.4 is broken. The same problem has happened on two separate machines.

After upgrading, an existing gnome user will find that the gnome-games are not listed under the Gnome panel's Applications->Games menu.

After upgrading, the gnome desktop environment is not configured if it is a new gnome user (e.g. a user that had never logged in under gnome 2.2 before the upgrade). The desktop environment only seems to work if the user's desktop is being migrated from 2.2 to 2.4 (with the exception of the missing games mentioned above).

further investigation shows that there are no useable games included in the gnome-games-2.4.0-1 package! Well, there is "gnect", but running it from the command line produces a set of errors and then exits.

You can verify this with a 'pacman -Ql gnome-games' and see that there are no games listed.

eric,

are you still having problems with new user gnome 2.4 installs? Several package updates seem to have fixed this for me, but I won't close until you confirm. Please pacman -Syu before testing -- thanks

Hi Dale,

Yes, the problem still exists. I have updated to the latest 'current' and 'unofficial' repositories.

You can duplicate the problem on your up-to-date system by creating a new user account and logging into gnome for the first time. The new user is faced with a spartan desktop and empty panel. As I recall, the first time I logged in as a new gnome user for gnome 2.2, I had a fully functional environment; at least I had two panels (top/bottom) and they contained menu items workspace-switchers, date/time, etc. A new Gnome 2.4 user has nothing.

Yes, I can confirm this is a bug. I cannot seem to track it down though, and my main development system is dying... (locks when X starts), so it might be a while before I can fully resolve this. If you have any more information on why it does this, or package changes, feel free to send them along and I'll try to test them.
