With chromium it's possible to specify that it should build against the system ffmpeg libraries instead of packing it own. The Gentoo ebuild does just this, along with many other system libraries. There is an effort to get browsers building against the system libraries by default; this encourages fixes to those libraries to be sent straight upstream, which benefits any other packages using those libraries. Additionally there are reported performance enchancements in latest ffmpeg 0.6 (see http://www.ffmpeg.org/releases/ffmpeg-0.6.release) that we could benefit from. Here it is a pkg with some patches that is building and running html5 video/audio using latest ffmpeg 0.6 for testing purposes. Additional info: * chromium and ffmpeg 0.6 |
