Details

Description:
The boot process inconsistently hangs at "Waiting for UDEV uevents to be processed...", requiring a hard reboot. It hangs about 75% of the time.

Hardware:
HP Mini with Intel GMA 3150

Detail:
I believed the problem was with KMS, since during the occations where the system did boot up fine the console font changed size just after the place where it normally hung.

Resolution:
Downgraded kernel from [2.6.33.4-1] to [2.6.31.5-1] per <http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel#KMS_.28Kernel_Mode_Setting.29>. (Actually that wiki page says to downgrade to [2.6.31.6-1], but I made a mistake.) Then, without rebooting I did a [pacman -Syu] back to kernel [2.6.33.4-1]. Now I can't reproduce the problem.

Steps to reproduce:
So far, I cannot reproduce it.

Status:
I'll investigate the cause if it starts to happen again. I'm submitting this report because this contains everything I did. If the problem starts happening again, some of the information above might be relevant.

Reason for closing:  Fixed
Additional comments about closing:  2010-08-27: A task closure has been requested. Reason for request: Downgrading the kernel to 2.6.35 has solved my problem. No other users have reported the same issue in this bug report.

i still can't give you "steps to reproduce" this error, but i have new information:

it is likely that the problem is not related to KMS;
- i added the modules "intel_agp" and "i915" to MODULES in mkinitcpio.conf
- KMS now happens very early in the boot process
- the boot process still occationally sticks at "Waiting for UDEV uevents etc..."

@wonder: i'm currently still using 2.6.36, but thank you for your suggestion... i'll try other kernels to see if that has any effect

status with 2.6.35?
Comment by Patrick R (dustmote) - Thursday, 19 August 2010, 13:34 GMT
Update:
- I ended up never trying kernel 2.6.34, and the problem continued with kernel 2.6.36 inconsistently.
- The problem was less frequent when I blacklisted the kernel modules "acpi-cpufreq", "cpufreq_powersave", and "b43" in "/etc/rc.conf". Hangs still occurred though.
- Just now I've switched to kernel 2.6.35 and done a couple of reboots with the three modules above enabled in "/etc/rc.conf". So far, I've experienced no hangs at boot.

I'll give you an update if the issue continues.

I've been using the computer normally now for one week with no issues. It would appear that when using 2.6.35 I have no problems with lockups/hangs during boot-time kernel module loading.
