Description:

After updating hplip to 3.10.5-1, printing stops working with error '/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed' (as stated by CUPS web interface).

Steps to reproduce:

Print a document with HP Deskjet 6540, hp-toolbox says 'Device communication error' and stops the queue, printer takes one sheet of paper but doesn't begin to print, re-starting queue impossible ('error: start/stop printer operation failed').

(temporary) Fix:

Get PKGBUILD 3.10.2-1, remove the queue via CUPS web interface, re-install printer via 'hp-setup'. Everything works again.

does this mean reinstalling printer fix the problem?

I had to reinstall the printer AND downgrade to the prior version (3.10.2-1) of hplip. I also tried doing just one of both, but that didn't work.

New information: Printing with version 3.10.2 occasionally fails when printer is switched off with the same message (backend failed). hp-toolbox is not able to start the printer queue, but CUPS webinterface can. After doing that, printing works fine (without printer reinstallation). I'm going to test 3.10.5 later with that in mind and post my results here.

After testing, 3.10.5 works when I restart the queue via CUPS. I guess it is some strange, unreproducible behaviour with my other printer.

can i close this then?

I guess so. Printing works, if the printer is switched on when I actually press 'Print'.
