mplayer and wish (tcl) both dump core. The stacktrace for mplayer is :

(gdb) where
#0 0xb77bdd9c in memcpy () from /usr/lib/libc.so.6
#1 0xb7819270 in __libc_pthread_init () from /usr/lib/libc.so.6
#2 0xb7d028c1 in __pthread_initialize_minimal_internal ()
from /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0
#3 0xb7d02488 in call_initialize_minimal () from /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0
#4 0xb7d02038 in _init () from /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0
#5 0xb7ff6d27 in call_init () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2
#6 0xb7ff6e83 in _dl_init_internal () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2
#7 0xb7feb8f5 in _dl_start_user () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2

See task #1613 for the dump with glibc-2.3.3.

My last solution (downgrading to glibc 2.3.2) does not work this time, since even grep will miss the GLIBC_2.3.4 symbol.

Btw.:Is there a way to distribute binaries compiled on my system to other machines having older versions of the glibc?

I'm trying to compile mplayer and tcl myself, lets see if it makes a difference:

Searching the tk source package on the arch homepage gives me a link to a nonexisting sourceforge page.

Downloading tcl & tk from http://tcl.activestate.com
./configure --prefix=/local/tcl-8.4.9; make; make install
-> It works!

Downloading mplayer, configure --prefix=/local/mplayer-1.0pre6, make, make install
-> Segfaults like the archlinux one.
Compiling without -O won't help either.

My system is an up to date archlinux, with a custom built 2.6.9 kernel, the pc is a dell centrino notebook.

Can you post the exact command that dumps? Neither mplayer or wish have this problem for me.
Comment by Rudolf Koenig (rudolfkoenig) - Monday, 03 January 2005, 09:16 GMT
The exact commands are

% /usr/bin/mplayer
% /usr/bin/tclsh
% /usr/bin/wish

-> Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I.e no arguments given.
All other programs (well, a lot of them) seem to work,
even ones using libdl or libpthread or both (like mpg123)

I can't reproduce tclsh and wish on my laptop with 2.6.8-debian, latest glibc and latest TCL.

Same here. All 3 are working fine here.
