Hi,

I have just installed a clean wombat-rc2 and the first thing I noticed after installing xorg & openbox was the 'fuzzy' appearance of Bitstream Vera fonts. I learned how to enable the freetype 'autohinter' interpreter from the archlinux wiki and --- wow --- what a difference it makes. BTW, I have a dual-head nvidia diaplay with one LCD and one CRT monitors. The 'enabling' of the 'autohinter' makes the display of the Bitstream Vera fonts better on both monitors. As the Bitstream Vera fonts are the 'default' anti-aliased fonts isntalled in most of the 'depends' of various pkgfiles, I think this would be a real value-add for the 'newbie' install of Arch Linux.

the relevent () for the /etc/fonts/local.conf:

<!-- Use the Autohinter -->
<match target="pattern">
<edit name="autohint" mode="assign">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>

As read in the wiki page: http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/XOrg%20Font%20Configuration
