On an i686 system, rrdtool-1.4.3-1 is unable to read or modify rrd files (created by either earlier versions or itself); it yields "ERROR: This RRD was created on another architecture".

Example:
$ rrdtool create bla.rrd DS:temp:GAUGE:1:2:3 RRA:MIN:.5:2:3
ERROR: This RRD was created on another architecture

Additional comments about closing:  Fixed in rrdtool 1.4.3-2 for i686. Patch from upstream.

Should probably rebuild with http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool-trac/changeset/2069?format=diff&new=2069 as a patch for now.
