DetailsDescription:
I have a MacBook 3,1 (late 2007) which I have installed ArchLinux onto. When Arch starts booting, once it gets to "Processing UDev events..." (or something like that), the screen goes black like it's changing the resolution, and doesn't come back. This doesn't happen every time. Sometimes it will continue booting, change the framebuffer resolution, run fsck, and then the init scripts. If I blindly log in as my user, and type startx, then X starts (as it should), and if I exit back into the console, it's visible. My hard drive is like this: [ Apple EFI /dev/sda1, 100mb | Mac OS X /dev/sda2, 220gb, HFS+ | Arch's /boot, /dev/sda3, 100mb, ext3 | Arch's / /dev/sda5, 100gb, JFS | Arch's swap /dev/sda4, 1gb ] (the reason Arch's / is sda5 and the swap is sda4 is because I made the swap first, because I wanted it to be *exactly* 1gb from the end of the harddrive. Additional info: * package version(s) * config and/or log files etc. Steps to reproduce: Install OS X on a MacBook. Install rEFIt. Use Disk Utility to create a second partition, so you have OS X's, and a spare. OS X -> 220GB, Arch -> 100GB. Boot into the GParted live CD. Delete the partition Disk utility created. Make a 100mb ext3 partition at the end of the OS X partition. Make a 1gb swap partition at the end of the hdd. Make a jfs partition that takes up all of the space between the ext3 partition and the swap partition. Go into the rEFIt bootloader, and sync the GPT tables to the MBR (Partition Utility). Reboot into Arch install disc. Install Arch. Use the option for the disks that says "Manually configure mount points and block devices" (or something like that).. - /dev/sda3 is /boot, ext3 - /dev/sda4 is swap - /dev/sda5 is /, jfs - Do NOT recreate any of the partitions. Install as you normally would. |

I solved this problem by adding intel_agp and i915 to the MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
There is a good chunk of information on KMS with intel in the wiki here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel#KMS_.28Kernel_Mode_Setting.29
You can also disable KMS altogether, but you will lose X functionality. It's all in the wiki link above.
